Property Tax Relief

For the most current property tax relief applications, we encourage you to visit Maine Revenue Services Property Tax Forms Page and search for the Property Tax form you need so that you can be sure you have the most recent version of the form. Below are some common exemption forms we see.

  • Homestead Exemption - This program provides a measure of property tax relief for certain individuals that have owned homestead property in Maine for at least 12 months and make the property they occupy on April 1 their permanent residence. Property owners would receive an exemption of $25,000. Application
  • Veteran's Exemption - A veteran who served during a recognized war period and is 62 years or older; or, is receiving 100% disability as a Veteran; or, became 100% disabled while serving, is eligible for $6,000. Application
  • Business Equipment Tax Exemption (BETE) Program - The BETE program is a 100% property tax exemption program for eligible property that would have been first subject to tax in Maine on or after 4/1/08. BETE does not replace the Business Equipment Tax Reimbursement program (see below). The BETR program remains in place for qualified property placed in service after April 1, 1995 and on or before April 1, 2007 and for retail property placed in service after April 1, 1995. Click here for more information about the BETE program. Application
  • Property Tax Deferral - The State Property Tax Deferral Program is a lifeline loan program that can cover the annual property tax bills of Maine people who are ages 65 and older or are permanently disabled and who cannot afford to pay them on their own. The loan program allows Maine’s most vulnerable community members to age in place and ensures that property taxes are still delivered to municipalities, requiring repayment of the loan once the property is sold or becomes part of an estate.  For more information about this state program, click hereApplication

Please contact the Tax Assessor if you have any questions or to submit a complete application.  Applications can be emailed to the Assessor or sent to the Town Office at 19 Washington School Rd, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.
